When planning for orthopedic surgery, patients need to consider the kind of anesthesia and pain medication they may receive. The choice of anesthesia and pain medication can improve recovery and overall outcome. Our orthopedic team, anesthesiologists and pharmacists work closely with each patient to help manage pain ensuring as much comfort as possible during a procedure, and after surgery.

“Anesthesia block” is a technique available at Capital Regional Medical Center and is known to improve pain relief, reduce side effects and allow patients to go home sooner when compared to general anesthesia.

Using ultrasound technology, anesthesia blocks provide accurate local anesthesia alongside a specific nerve or nerve bundle. The local anesthetic is absorbed into the nerve inhibiting pain, causing a lack of sensation. The benefit to the patient is less pain and a faster recovery.
