Stepping Up the Fight Against Lung Cancer
August 21, 2009
Capital Regional Medical Center has stepped up the fight against lung cancer by acquiring the inReach™ state-of-the-art equipment by superDimension. Previously residents of Tallahassee area were required to seek treatment elsewhere. In addition, Capital Regional has also acquired endobronchial ultrasound or EBUS, as a complimentary technology for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of respiratory ailments including lung cancer.
The inReach ™ System utilizes technology similar to the Global Positioning System (GPS) to create a map of the patient for physicians to find and remove potential tumors in a less invasive manner than what previously could have required removal of a rib and large sections of the lung for testing and treatment. With the inReach™ System, the physician can now locate, test and plan treatment for lung lesions and lymph nodes that couldn’t be reached by traditional bronchoscopy technology. The first of these procedures was performed on Friday, August 21, 2009 by Drs. Alberto Fernandez and Praful Patel at Capital Regional Medical Center.
Lung cancer tops the list as the second leading cause of death in both men and women in Florida according to statics from a study developed by the American Cancer Society and as many as 213, 380 men and women in the United States will be diagnosed with this disease this year alone. “We felt it was imperative to bring this cutting edge technology and treatment to the people of Tallahassee and the surrounding areas,” stated Capital Regional Medical Center CEO, Bud Wethington. “We want to help those families that want to be near their loved ones. In these economic times, staying in town and saving the cost of traveling helps everyone.”
